Argo Group is a Bermuda-based international underwriter of specialty insurance and reinsurance products in areas of the property and casualty market. Argo operates under four main business segments: Excess & Surplus, Commercial Specialty, Syndicate 1200 and International Specialty. Together, these four units the Argo Group generates over $2 billion in Gross Written Premiums annually through a diverse collection of channels including Insurance, Reinsurance, Managing General Agency, and Sidecar programs.
While continuing to grow organically, the Argo Group has made numerous strategic acquisitions over the past 20 years. In many cases, these newly acquired units remained on their pre-merger Policy, Claims and Billing applications, as they had been designed and customized to cater to that business’ needs. While this strategy worked for many years on a case-by-case basis, the incremental accumulation of core business applications over time caused Argo’s application portfolio to grow to over 20 core Policy systems and 10 core Claims systems. This sprawling IT landscape began straining Argo’s IT support resources, and hindered the ability for the Enterprise Application Development team to make investments which were impactful across large segments of the business user base.
The Donyati project team collaborated with Argo’s Enterprise Application group to strategize how to execute a consolidation and rationalization initiative which would ultimately impact the entire Argo Business and IT user base. Both sides quickly agreed that the biggest challenge to this effort was a general lack in understanding of how the wide range of applications interacted with each other, what each application’s capabilities and shortcomings were, and where application sprawl was creating pain points for IT and business users alike.
In the first year at Argo, the project team:
- Comprehensively documented the entire current application landscape visually, creating wall-sized maps for both the US and International businesses
- Interviewed and collaborated with nearly 100 business and IT stakeholders to understand the functional and technical builds of each application, including data flows and integration points
- Developed a multi-phase, 5-year consolidation and rationalization plan based upon current state findings
For the first time in its history, Argo’s IT organization can now view the entirety of their US and Global application portfolio in one place. Having access to this level of comprehensive documentation empowers key decision makers to better understand the role and interdependencies of each application in their portfolio, allowing them to make more informed decisions. This improved insight also allows them to understand and prepare for the cascading downstream impacts that making modifications to one application will have on their overall portfolio. Seeing the value our team has brought to its documentation and road-mapping efforts, Argo has extended its contract with Donyati, allowing us to serve as their partner in seeing this consolidation effort through to realization.
